To protect and enhance the reliability, efficiency, affordability, and security of our nation’s electric system and promote the use of renewable energy and electric plug-in vehicles, we need a smarter grid. Municipalities are well situated to either incorporate smart grid projects into their own utility systems or work with their utility to do so.
What is a "smart grid?" First, the "grid" is the nation’s electric power infrastructure (e.g., power lines, substations, etc.). It is a network of facilities delivering electricity to consumers, including more than 300,000 miles of transmission lines to which more than 9,200 electric generating units are connected.
