The Commonwealth government has released the much-anticipated report into its review of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), which includes 30 proposals to fundamentally reform Australian privacy law, impose stricter penalties and broader enforcement powers, and place more power in the hands of individuals. In this article, we summarise the report’s key proposals, and provide commentary on the likely effect of reform on Australian businesses and Australia’s place within international privacy regimes.
