Textile waste generation within the EU is on the rise, yet its management still fails to adhere to the waste hierarchy principles. The European Commission has proposed a revision of the Waste Framework Directive with national extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles as part of the solution.
With wide ranging products falling into scope and extended liability borne by “textile producers” which broadly covers manufacturers, importers or distributors supplying any Member State including to private households, once adopted could place many companies in scope and liable for EPR costs.
