EU legislators are making steady progress towards finalising the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. A significant breakthrough occurred on 4 March 2024, when a political agreement on the proposal was achieved. The agreement was then formally endorsed by the EU27 ambassadors on 15 March, followed by approval from the EU Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) on 19 March. However, additional steps are needed for the text to become formally adopted, published and enacted as a binding EU law. Further votes in the EU Parliament and the Council are required to move the process forward. For the time being, a vote on the file in the plenary session of the EU Parliament is scheduled to take place on 24 April 2024, while the timeline in the Council has not been confirmed.
We present an overview of key selected elements of the agreement reached.
