A team of lawyers from Squire Sanders in Prague has assisted Westinghouse Electric Company and its Czech subsidiary in the submission of a bid for the multi-billion pound expansion of Czech power group CEZ’s nuclear plant, which was submitted earlier this month.

CEZ – majority-owned by the Czech government – launched a tender in 2009 (with the recent bid submission phase beginning October 2011) for a strategic partner to build two new units at its Temelin nuclear plant in the south of the country. It is the biggest-ever procurement deal in the country, worth CZK 200bn (£6.29 billion).

CEZ is now considering bids from a total of three bidders; Westinghouse of the US, France’s Areva and a Czech-Russian consortium comprising Skoda JS, Gidropress and Atomstrojexport.

The Squire Sanders team was led by Jeff McGehee and involved a number of lawyers in the office including Marketa Lindnerova and Marketa Lukesova. The lawyers assisted Westinghouse on the contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the new units and the related nuclear fuel contract, as well as on Czech public procurement issues.

CEZ is expected to select a winning bid near the end of 2013.
