Squire Patton Boggs has appointed Matthew Powell as a partner in its UAE Corporate Practice, having joined from Shearman & Sterling in the UAE.

Welcoming Mr. Powell, Campbell Steedman, the Dubai office managing partner, said: “It is great to have Matthew with us as we start the new year. He joins a practice that has gone from strength to strength in 2020. Despite the challenges of the global pandemic, we have grown our business and expanded our team in the region, and look forward to building further in 2021. Matthew’s experience and skillset, together with his sector knowledge in private equity, energy, diversified industrials, technology and financial services, are complementary to our UAE and GCC business, and will benefit our regional and global client base.”

“I am delighted to be joining one of the most dynamic international law firms in the region,” commented Mr. Powell. “There are significant synergies with my practice and enormous opportunities to collaborate with my new colleagues in the region and across the firm’s global platform.”

Mr. Powell was previously a partner in the Mergers & Acquisitions practice at Shearman & Sterling since 2015, prior to which he worked with Linklaters in both London and the UAE. He specialises in a wide range of cross-border transactions, including public and private M&A, joint ventures and equity capital markets issues, across MENA and sub-Saharan Africa. He has acted for global energy companies, corporates and multinationals, sovereign wealth funds, institutional investors, private equity firms and family offices. His industry expertise is broad, though with a particular focus on the energy, oil and gas, industrial and technology sectors, where he also has significant in-house experience.

A solicitor qualified in England and Wales, Mr. Powell is a graduate of the University of Oxford and Nottingham Law School. He is also a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.
