Seasoned US diplomat and government relations executive joins firm at time of heightened geopolitical risk and regulatory change for global clients

Global law firm Squire Patton Boggs has hired former US Ambassador Paul Jones into its Public Policy practice as an International Affairs Advisor. He most recently led International Government Relations at RTX, formerly Raytheon Technologies, and brings a distinguished 33-year career in the US Department of State.

“Ambassador Jones is one of the foremost diplomats of his generation, coupling a proud record of public service with robust private sector experience,” said Chair and Global CEO Mark Ruehlmann. “His keen understanding of foreign policy and its effect on commerce puts him in a unique position to advise clients at a time when they increasingly need counsel mitigating the impacts regulatory and geopolitical disruptions have on their business.”

During his three-decade career with the US Department of State, Ambassador Jones served as US Ambassador to Poland (2015-18), US Ambassador to Malaysia (2010-13), Chief of Mission in Pakistan (2018-20), and Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires in the Philippines (2005-2009).

His senior Washington positions have included Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2013-15) and Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (2009-10). In addition to his ambassadorial appointments, Ambassador Jones’ previous in-country postings include US embassies in Russia, Colombia, and North Macedonia, and the US Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna, Austria.

At RTX, Ambassador Jones was Vice President for International Government Relations leading a team deployed across Singapore, New Delhi, Brussels, Ottawa, and Washington – engaging with senior political, government and business leaders in 25 countries.

Public Policy co-chair Robert Kapla said, “The strength of our practice is rooted in our ability to blend cross border legal and policy solutions to forecast opportunities for our clients and help solve their problems. Ambassador Jones is a perfect fit and an exciting addition who will work closely with our team in Washington and across the globe. His experience and international connections will be invaluable assets for clients dealing with complex issues from trade, FDI, and economic development, to ESG and international sanctions.”

Commenting on his move to the firm, Ambassador Jones said, “Squire Patton Boggs’ reputation as a public policy powerhouse and the scale of its global legal practice were compelling reasons to join the firm. The firm’s vision and value proposition are very clear and I’m excited to join this exceptional team.”
