Oliver Bristow is an associate in our Environmental, Safety & Health Practice based in our Manchester and Birmingham offices. He advises multinational clients on a broad range of environmental, health and safety, product compliance (including food products), and operator licensing laws across multiple jurisdictions. He has a particular specialism in fire and building safety laws in the UK. Oliver also advises on large energy and real estate transactions with environmental and health and safety considerations, as well as corporate transactions – in relation to which he also advises on anti-bribery and anticorruption, and anti-modern-slavery. Oliver has particular interests in environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters, fire and building safety, sustainability, producer responsibility, recycling and operator licensing matters.
Oliver also defends companies and individuals facing criminal, health and safety, operator licensing and other regulatory investigations, prosecutions and inquiries. He also assists companies involved in coronial proceedings. Oliver has an extensive and varied background in regulatory law and has acted in both a defence and prosecution capacity.
Oliver has been recognised by The Legal 500 UK. He is a member of the UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA) and sits on its northern committee. He is also a member of the Health and Safety Lawyers Association (HSLA).
- Advising a well-known multinational travel search engine and travel agency on compliance with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme Regulations 2014 (ESOS), in connection with an internal ESG initiative.
- Advising a well-known multinational engineering technology manufacturer and supplier on a real estate transaction with numerous complex environmental considerations, including contaminated land, waste and environmental permitting issues, and drafting a bespoke environmental schedule dealing with environmental matters, including ongoing remediation obligations, remediation validation, consultant and contractor warranties, and the apportionment of liability between the parties.
- Assisting in the defence of a criminal health and safety prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and a coroner’s inquest, on behalf of a well-known multinational plastics manufacturer.
- Advising a large property investor on the Building Safety Act 2022 and its potential impacts in relation to a proposed investment into a portfolio of residential properties in England.
- Advising on a transaction involving the purchase of six energy-from-waste sites across England and Wales, with a combined value of around £1.6 billion.
- Advising a logistics company in relation to several bridge strikes and future solutions to prevent re-occurrence, resulting in the company’s successfully avoiding an operator licensing public inquiry before a traffic commissioner.
- Advising a well-known contractor PLC on the carriage of dangerous goods by land, air and sea across the whole of the UK.
- Advising a student accommodation property management company on recent changes to building and fire safety laws, and updating their property management agreements to ensure compliance and that they were adequately protected from criminal and commercial risks.
- Advising a multinational client on the use of e-warranties across eight jurisdictions and three continents.
- Advising multiple multinational manufacturers on all aspects of the plastic packaging tax, including how to apply the relevant technical definitions regarding recycled plastic.
