Mike Caird is a director in the Litigation department based in our Manchester office. His expertise includes advising national and international corporate clients on resolving a wide variety of contractual, commercial, professional negligence and product liability disputes via negotiation, litigation, arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Mike spent six years training and working at a major City law firm in both London and Hong Kong. Following a four-year sabbatical sailing around the world as a professional yachtsman, he relocated to North West England to continue his dispute resolution practice with Squire Patton Boggs.

During that time, Mike spent several months on client secondment as in-house counsel in the Global Retail and Commercial Banking Litigation Department at Barclays Bank plc in Canary Wharf, where he advised on a wide range of retail and commercial banking litigation.

More recently, Mike has advised as part of a global team on several high profile, international Construction disputes worth many billions of dollars.

  • Acting for a construction company in defence of a claim relating to a motorsport venue.
  • Acting for a Middle East government on in a high-profile international ICC arbitration in a dispute relating to a substantial, multi-billion dollar transport infrastructure project.
  • Acting for a Far East construction company on a multi-billion dollar dispute arising from a luxury hotel development in the Caribbean.
  • Acting for a major UK high street bank on a long term ADR project involving several thousand professional negligence claims.
  • Advising a Norwegian company in defence of a substantial product liability claim following the £25 million product recall of a consumer drink.
  • Acting for two UK paper manufacturers in claims to recover losses in excess of £14 million following two separate catastrophic warehouse fires.
  • Acting for a number of former Premiership footballers in an action for professional negligence against their former financial advisers. 
  • Advising the former director of a company providing short term secured bridging finance in the defence of a £3 million claim by his former employer alleging negligence, financial impropriety and fraud. 
  • Acting for a worldwide direct selling organisation in the leading case relating to the successful defence of public interest winding up petitions – Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform v Amway (UK) Limited [2008] EWHC (Ch) 1054. 
  • Acting for a major international tobacco manufacturer in its successful defence of a three-year, multi-party personal injury action in the UK (the Tobacco Litigation) – Hodgson & Others v Imperial Tobacco & Others, 1998 WLR 1056.
  • Advising Project XJ220 Limited in litigation and arbitration proceedings relating to the Jaguar XJ220 Supercar.
