Mike Gorton is an associate based in the Pensions team in our London office, advising both employers and trustees of UK defined benefit (DB) and defined contribution (DC) pension schemes. He joined the firm in 2023, having qualified as a lawyer in 2016.

Before joining us, Mike worked as an in-house lawyer at a major multinational telecommunications PLC, where he advised on pensions legal, risk and policy issues across its varied pension schemes (both DB and DC arrangements) in the UK. Before this, Mike qualified into the pensions team of a private practice law firm, which included a secondment to a large trustee client.

  • Advising employer and trustee clients on complex funding arrangements incorporating contingent assets.
  • Advising trustee clients on benefit changes such as the closure to future accrual of DB pension schemes.
  • Advising on the pensions aspects of several high-value corporate transactions and Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations (TUPE), including transfers involving public sector pension rights.
  • Advising employer and trustee clients on member disputes and Pensions Ombudsman determinations.
  • Advising insurance clients on the due diligence aspects of the buyout of several large DB pension schemes.
  • Reviewing member communications, scheme constitutional documents and other ancillary agreements such as administration agreements.
