Georgie Messent is a partner and leads the environmental and sustainability team within our Environmental, Safety & Health Practice.

She started her career more than 25 years ago and was a partner for over 15 years in private practice at leading national and multinational UK law firms.

Over her career, Georgie has remained an environmental specialist and advised on management of environmental and health and safety liabilities on significant multinational transactions. She has led the defence of major environmental cases, including waste litigation for household name clients and defence of criminal litigation. She has also provided practical and cost-effective guidance on environmental challenges arising from a huge range of environmental regulatory issues.

Most recently, Georgie has led advice to UK-, European- and US-headquartered clients on practical interpretation of the new ESG reporting frameworks in the EU and the UK – including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).

Georgie has also specialised in carbon law and carbon regulation since just after 2000 and has advised the UK government and various international clients on carbon trading and carbon regulation. As a result, she is in a unique position from which to advise clients on changes to comply with net zero related legislation, with a focus on supply chain and operational liabilities.

Georgie has been ranked as a leader in her field for more than 19 years by Chambers and The Legal 500 in the UK and is ranked in the International Who’s Who of Environmental Lawyers.
