Anton Shagalov is an associate in the International Dispute Resolution Practice Group, specialising in international arbitration, with particular focus on investment disputes. He advises companies, sovereign states and state-owned entities across a range of industries, including oil and gas, energy, telecom and hospitality.

Anton has been engaged in arbitrations administered by major arbitral institutions, including the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), as well as under the rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

  • Acting for the Republic of Kazakhstan in a multibillion UNCITRAL arbitration arising out of a consortium of oil majors’ alleged failure to develop an oil field, recovery of costs in breach of their obligations under a production sharing agreement and multiple breaches of their environmental obligations.
  • Acting for the Republic of Benin in a US$35 million ICSID arbitration initiated by seven companies under Benin’s foreign investment laws, in connection with the construction of a hotel complex.
  • Acting for a major car producer in a post-M&A dispute under the ICC Rules, arising out of the alleged breach of warranty.
  • Acting for the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kazakh national oil company (NOC) in the pre-arbitration negotiations with a consortium of oil majors in connection with the alleged breach by the consortium of the cost recovery provisions in a production sharing agreement.
  • Acting for the Republic of Latvia in the UNCITRAL arbitration brought under the Energy Charter Treaty concerning the alleged modification of the energy regulatory framework, including the renewable energy incentives programme.
  • Acting for a major African telecom company in a complex multimillion-dollar ICC dispute in connection with the alleged breach of a joint-venture (JV) agreement.
