Henry Spence is an associate in the International Dispute Resolution Practice Group, based in the London office.

He advises on high-value international disputes across a broad range of sectors, including energy, natural resources and international trade. In those matters, and in related enforcement proceedings before the Senior Courts of England & Wales, Henry frequently acts on behalf of both sovereign states and private companies.

Henry has acted for clients before several major arbitral institutions, including the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC, ICSID, GAFTA, FOSFA and LMAA.

  • Advising an Angolan oil and gas company in relation to arbitration claims valued in excess of US$250 million arising out of contracts for the supply of services and tools.
  • Advising multiple Asia-based energy buyers in ongoing LNG price review negotiations and pre-dispute contract review processes.
  • Represented a Japanese energy company in an LNG gas price review arbitration under the LCIA Rules.
  • Acting for a Chinese LNG buyer in an ICC arbitration in relation to cargo deliveries under a long-term gas supply contract with an Asia Pacific-based seller.
  • Representing a Saudi Arabian conglomerate in enforcement proceedings before the Senior Courts of England & Wales arising out of an Egyptian arbitration award.
  • Acting for the Cameroonian national oil refinery in complex litigation valued at over US$100 million arising out of contracts for the supply of crude oil to a Nigerian energy conglomerate.
  • Acting for a Middle Eastern defence company in an ICC arbitration related to the improper termination of a contract for provision of long-term after-sales support and logistics services in a large-scale defence project for the national armed forces.
  • Providing ad hoc advice in connection with a potential claim under Article 1 of Protocol 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights arising from an expropriation of assets.
  • Counsel to an investment company pursuing claims in an SIAC arising out of non-disclosure and non-circumvention agreements related to the exploration of a Russian coal mine with claim values exceeding US$1 billion.
  • Counsel to the Federal Republic of Nigeria in enforcement proceedings arising out of a Nigerian arbitration award relating to the development of a free trade zone.
  • Counsel to a Nigerian state entity in enforcement proceedings arising out of a Nigerian arbitration award before the Technology and Construction Court in London.
  • Counsel to a Central European country in an UNCITRAL arbitration arising out of a production sharing agreement with an international consortium of oil majors, with claim values totalling several billion US$.
  • Counsel to a Korean trading company in an SIAC arbitration arising out of an agency agreement with an Australian grain trader.
  • Acted for the local subsidiary of a Japanese medical services company in an SIAC arbitration against a Mongolian SOE for damages for the wrongful termination of a long-term hospital management contract.
