Ilian Valev is an associate in our firm’s Financial Services Practice, where he represents banks, sponsors, public companies and private companies in complex commercial financing transactions, as well as other corporate and regulatory matters, with a focus on renewable energy and sustainability. In the energy sector, Ilian has represented administrative agents, lenders, sponsors and borrowers in financing the development, acquisition, construction and operation of numerous utilities, pipelines and renewable electricity generating facilities, including wind, solar and battery projects, primarily involving secured and back-levered project financings.

Ilian’s prior experience in the commercial financing space includes specialized project financing, syndicated loans, mezzanine financing, secured and unsecured commercial loans, real estate acquisition loans, construction financing and workouts and loan restructurings.

Prior to attending law school at Arizona State University, Ilian worked as a financial analyst for one of the largest aerospace companies in the world, where he oversaw the financial planning of a US$4.8 billion unit.

Ilian has assisted on a variety of key transactions, including:

  • Representing a multinational pharmaceutical company on amendments to its syndicated loan facility totaling over US$1.5 billion, previously issued secured and unsecured notes totaling US$5.1 billion and a new factoring facility with a global bank.
  • Representing a large US energy company and its various portfolio and project companies in connection with project and back-leveraged financings, in respect of portfolios containing over 25 utility-scale solar, wind and battery projects, aggregating over 4GW of renewable energy generation capacity, with loan proceeds totaling over US$2 billion.
  • Representing a large US energy company, as well as its various portfolio and project companies in private placements of over US$500 million principal amount of back-leveraged senior secured notes in respect of utility-scale solar, wind and battery projects.
