Squire Patton Boggs Appoints Southampton FC Chief Operating Officer

Squire Patton Boggs has engaged Tim Greenwell, the former Chief Operating Officer at Southampton Football Club, as a consultant to the Sports Practice based in the firm’s London office.

An experienced General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Greenwell has spent over 25 years working across the sports, entertainment, automotive and corporate finance sectors. He has led the development of in-house legal teams and implemented governance, sustainability, safety, investigations, integrity, risk and reputation management programmes.

Prior to joining Southampton Football Club in 2016, Tim was UK General Counsel at Toyota (GB) PLC. He has also held roles at BOC Edwards Group Limited and Deutsche Bank.

Stephen Sampson, who heads the firm’s Sports and Entertainment Industry Group, said: “We are delighted to have Tim’s services available to the firm. His long experience as both a solicitor and Chief Operating Officer within a Premier League and EFL Championship football club gives him unique experience that will be invaluable to our clients across the sport sector. In particular, within football, the creation of the Independent Football Regulator is a significant change for the governance of professional clubs playing within the top five leagues in England. Tim’s deep experience in governance and compliance, in both football and other industries, will be essential as clubs now contend with the new regime.”

“We look forward to working with Tim as he shares with us and our clients his expertise on day-to-day legal, compliance and operational matters and on acquisition and development projects that can be transformational for clubs and their communities.”

On joining the firm, Mr. Greenwell commented: “I hold Squire Patton Boggs in high regard, having worked with the Sports law team over a number of years as a client, and witnessed the depth of its industry knowledge and expertise. I am excited to work with one of the leading practices in this field and look forward to contributing to its continued success.”
