About Joel

Joel Fam is an associate in our Litigation Practice Group who advises on complex corporate and commercial disputes, with experience across the energy and natural resources, financial services and industrial sectors.

His practice includes contractual and corporate disputes, public and administrative law matters, regulatory proceedings and restructuring and insolvency matters. Joel has acted in disputes involving major energy and resources projects, share and business sale agreements, joint ventures, property developments and cross-border supply arrangements. Joel represents clients in proceedings before superior state courts, the Federal Court of Australia and various tribunals, as well as in mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Experience

  • Acting for a listed oil and gas company in the first challenge brought under the “water trigger” provisions of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth), concerning alleged significant impacts on water resources arising from an unconventional gas project.

  • Acting for a Finland-based manufacturer in contractual disputes arising from international supply arrangements involving subsidiaries in China, Brazil and India and an Australian supplier, including coordinating with local counsel on arbitration strategy and related proceedings across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Advising a Japanese global avionics manufacturer in relation to distressed airline exposures across Australia and several Asian jurisdictions.

  • Advising financial institutions and insolvency practitioners in relation to the external administration of corporate groups with operations across Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

  • Acting for insurers, listed companies and other corporate clients in commercial disputes, insolvency proceedings and debt recovery matters before Australian state and federal courts.
