About Mia

Mia Threnoworth’s practice focuses on regulatory advice, investigations and proceedings in relation to competition and consumer law, as well as energy markets and infrastructure.

Prior to joining our firm, Mia practiced at other Australian law firms and held several in-house roles in the public sector, including for a government energy utility, an independent statutory integrity commission and a national competition regulator. This background means Mia is adept at advising both private sector and government clients.

Experience

  • Advising a government energy utility on regulations aimed at ring-fencing certain business activities of the utility imposed upon it, following its creation via a merger of two previously separate state-owned entities.

  • Advising on electricity market regulations and other general laws applicable to energy supply in Western Australia.

  • Undertaking complex investigations into potential anticompetitive conduct (such as cartel conduct, exclusive dealing and misuse of market power), and alleged breaches of the Australian Consumer Law provisions (such as misleading and deceptive conduct).

  • Advising a major Australian financial institution on merger clearance approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in relation to its proposed acquisition of a target corporation, including preparing submissions, liaising with an expert economist and responding to the ACCC’s document and information requests.

  • Advising various clients on responding notices issued by the ACCC under section 155 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth) compelling the production of documentation or information.

  • Advising various clients on ACCC investigations into alleged anticompetitive conduct.

  • Advising in relation to the (then) Trade Practices Act 1974 (Cth), including on issues regarding access to essential infrastructure regulated under Part IIIA of that act (such as electricity transmission grids, telecommunications networks, gas and water pipelines and railroad terminals and tracks).
