Nick Chan, a justice of the peace, is an experienced lawyer, lawmaker, policy-setter, law lecturer and head of a regional centre established by international law. Nick takes pride in providing innovative and cost-effective legal solutions utilizing his broad knowledge and network, computer science with artificial intelligence (AI) background, experience serving in boardrooms and regulatory authorities and in-house experience at Fortune 100 technology companies where he had regional responsibilities. He is admitted to practice law in Hong Kong and elsewhere (admitted but without holding current practice certificate in England and Wales, and Australia). He is a qualified and practicing China appointed attesting officer.
His core legal disciplines include corporate and commercial, M&A, private equity (PE)/venture capital (VC)/fund/family office work, disputes resolution, AI, big data, cybersecurity, date privacy, environmental, social and governance (ESG), FinTech, intellectual property, competition laws, life science, law drafting and public policy advocacy.
His clients include universities, governments, sovereign funds, private equity firms, VC firms, family offices, startups, entrepreneurs and multinational corporations. He has acted in many multibillion-dollar M&A projects, cross-border and multinational inbound and outbound investments, as well as prevent and resolve investor state disputes, PE/VC and IP licensing projects that help commercialize technology that impacts on everyday life. Nick has worked on the liberalization of regulated markets in many jurisdictions.
Nick serves as elected National People’s Congress member of the People’s Republic of China, where he participates in drafting laws and formulating policies for the country, member of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, founding chairman of the eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre and as head of the AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, which is established under international laws and operates under the auspices of Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO), with 49 member states in Asia and Africa.
Nick has guest lectured at business schools and in various law schools including at Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese University, Hong Kong University and City University. For his role in advancing the Rule of Law, innovation, technology, education and the broader community, Nick is recognized and conferred Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Justice of the Peace, Bronze Bauhinia Star and Medal of Honour by the government
