Retailers, Act Now to Avoid Penalties: National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage

    National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage issues are being reported almost daily due to increased activity from HMRC, which is pursuing companies for breaches of these regulations. The consequences of being found to be non-compliant are costly and damaging to reputation.

    Enforcement action taken by HMRC includes demanding payment of arrears going back six years, penalties of up to 200% of the arrears payments, possible criminal sanctions and referral to the government for public naming and shaming. For many businesses, these are potentially large levels of financial liability.

    The consequences of non-compliance can be mitigated by taking steps now to assess compliance and address areas of risk.
