In March 2023, the Italian Data Protection Authority sparked headlines by imposing a temporary ban on ChatGPT. Although Italy’s ban was lifted after only a few weeks, the European Data Protection Board established a joint taskforce to investigate continuing privacy concerns relating to the use and development of ChatGPT and similar services.
