Introduction

Multi-club ownership (MCO) has been driven by the commercialisation and globalisation of professional sport, encouraging owners and investors to view clubs as interconnected assets to pursue competitive and financial advantages.

In my previous article, I focussed on the exponential rise of MCO in football over the past decade, including the perceived benefits of these structures and the response of regulators to potential integrity threats. I also explained that MCO does not sit in a football silo; vertical and horizontal ownership models have been, and continue to be, applied well beyond the football landscape.

In this follow-up article, I examine:

  • Portfolio-style investment and regulatory approaches in other sports, including rugby union, cricket and motorsport

  • Where further MCO opportunities may present themselves, particularly in relation to new sports, competitions and territories
