Squire Patton Boggs has appointed Lorena Fatás as partner in its Litigation Practice Group in the Madrid office. Lorena was formerly a State Attorney in the Special Department for Economy, Energy and Environmental Law within Spain’s State Attorney Office. She is well known for her work in handling complex litigation, arbitration and regulatory matters related to economic policy, energy transition, and environmental regulations.

Lorena Fatás is a highly experienced arbitration and litigation lawyer. Before becoming a State Attorney in the Special Department for Economy, Energy and Environmental Law within the State Attorney Office, she served for more than five years in the Spanish government’s International Arbitration Department, where she became the Deputy Head in 2021. During this time, she advised and represented the Kingdom of Spain in complex investor-state disputes, particularly under the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) and bilateral investment treaties (BITs).
Lorena’s expertise includes investment and commercial disputes, representation of sovereign states, and advisory work in sectors such as banking, energy, infrastructure, and state-owned enterprises. She has also worked extensively on recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards in multiple jurisdictions. Her work as a litigator has been recognized by UNCITRAL, having attended one of its working Groups on ISDS reform. Lorena also has extensive experience of institutions related to procedural law and arbitration, such as ICSID and SCC.
