Kathryn (Katie) M. Brown is a strategic, detail-oriented advocate who focuses her practice on high-stakes, complex litigation matters at both the trial and appellate level in federal and state courts. Katie has broad experience representing clients in complex commercial disputes, mass toxic torts, class actions, multidistrict litigation, false advertising and consumer fraud disputes, as well as cross-border litigation. She leverages her federal clerkship experience in critical motions and appeals. Katie has presented oral argument in both state and federal trial courts and courts of appeals.
Katie has experience in every stage of litigation. She manages complex discovery, including resolving discovery disputes, spearheading e-discovery and conducting depositions. Katie has arbitration, trial and hearing experience as well. This includes witness preparation, witness examination, pre-trial motions practice and expert witness preparation.
Katie maintains a robust pro bono practice. She has advocated for clients in state and federal matters in trial and appellate proceedings. Most recently, she argued before the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in a criminal appeal raising a novel Fourth Amendment issue. In 2023, she received the Pro Bono Associate of the Year award.
Katie is an active member of the Columbus bar and prioritizes giving back to the Columbus community. She is secretary of the Columbus Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Katie has also served on the Federal Bar Association’s national Civics, Service and Outreach Committee. Katie is a member of the Ohio Women’s Bar Association.
Prior to joining the firm, Katie served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Edmund A. Sargus, Jr., US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio; the Honorable Karen Nelson Moore, US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; and the Honorable Judith E. Levy, US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She also worked as a summer associate at another top 20 international law firm in Washington DC, and as a legal extern for the Honorable James B. Zagel, US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Katie graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, where she was a book review editor for the Michigan Law Review, the board chair of the Henry M. Campbell Moot Court Competition and a student attorney in the Federal Appellate Litigation and Human Trafficking Clinics. Before law school, she worked in nonprofits and trade associations.
